World War I

The First World War was fought from 1914-1918 and claimed over 20 million victims – both soldiers and civilians. Beginning after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, on one side were the Allies, which consisted of the US, Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, and Japan, and the Central Powers on the other, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. Although it was deemed “the war to end all wars,” that obviously wasn’t true, and its impact can be seen on major events and wars since.
